10 Years Ago Today, the Original iPhone Officially Launched

Exactly 10 years ago today, on June 29, 2007, the original iPhone went on sale, six months after Steve Jobs stood onstage at Macworld Expo 2007 in San Francisco and told the world Apple was reinventing the phone, revolutionizing an entire industry like it had done with the Macintosh in 1984 and the iPod in 2001.

.

The iPhone, with its 3.5-inch display, lack of a physical keyboard, Apple-designed touch-based user interface, and multi-touch support, was unique among phones of that era, and as Jobs promised, it changed everything. The product that some speculated would fail miserably shaped the smartphone industry and made Apple one of the most valuable companies in the world.

Even before the public had touched an iPhone, there was incredible hype, just like there is today with each new iteration. In the days leading up to the iPhone's release, MacRumors shared dozens of stories, like sightings out in the wild, photos of training manuals, benchmarks, in-store displays, and banners outside of stores. And of course, before the first iPhone launched, there were already rumors of an iPhone 2.

iPhone sales started at 6:00 p.m. local time on June 29, 2007, but people started lining up days ahead of time. Hours before the iPhone launched, hundreds of people were lined up at AT&T locations and the then-164 Apple Stores across the United States and around the world.

Apple Stores shut down at 2:00 p.m. to prepare for launch, and at 6:00 p.m. on the East Coast, the first iPhones were in the hands of customers. Apple Stores stayed open until midnight that day selling iPhones, and the rest is history. By October of 2008, Apple had sold 10 million iPhones, meeting an internal goal, and now, 10 years later on June 29, 2017, Apple has sold well over a billion iPhones.

MacRumors founder Arnold Kim's iPhone unboxing photo, taken on launch day.

When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone, he presented it as three revolutionary products: a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a breakthrough internet communications device. "An iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator. Are you getting it? These are not three separate devices," said Jobs. "This is one device."

Over the years, the iPhone has evolved and it's not just three products -- it's over a dozen. What was once just a phone, an iPod, and an internet communicator is now also a high quality point and shoot camera, a camcorder, a GPS device, a scanner, a portable gaming system, a wallet replacement, an e-book reader, a TV, a newspaper, a flash light, and so much more.

As Tim Cook said in 2016 when Apple reached its 1 billion iPhone milestone, the iPhone is "more than a constant companion," it's "an essential part of our daily life." These days, we don't ever have to be parted from our iPhones, even in the shower. It's indispensable.

The 2016 iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Love Apple or hate Apple, there's no denying the impact of first iPhone. The story of how it was conceived and created is repeated over and over again in interviews and in books as we suss out every detail, no matter how small, to relive the legend of Steve Jobs and the Project Purple team toiling for two and a half years to conjure up a device "literally five years ahead" of every other mobile device on the market, as Jobs himself said.

Even 10 years later, there are new tidbits to learn and others to revisit. According to new anecdote from a recently published book, Jobs allegedly wanted a permanent "back" button to accompany the Home button, but he was ultimately talked out of the addition by longtime Apple designer Imran Chaudhri. Scott Forstall, who once led the software development team at Apple, also re-shared a story this month about how the idea for the tablet that preceded the iPhone came about because Jobs "hated" a guy at Microsoft and wanted show him up by creating a tablet with capacitive touch and multitouch. That tablet became the iPhone when the team shifted focus.

While Apple is a much different company today than it was 10 years ago, and there will never again be another "first" iPhone, we may see a little original iPhone magic in 2017. This year's iPhone, which some rumors have said will be marketed and celebrated as an anniversary iPhone, is looking like it will include some of the biggest design changes we've seen made to the iPhone since 2007.

The Home button, an iconic user interface element that's been present on iPhone for the last 10 years, is being eliminated in favor of an edge-to-edge OLED display that does away with the thick top and bottom bezels we're used to seeing on the iPhone. The "iPhone 8," as it has been nicknamed, will feature a glass body that allows Apple to take the first step towards wire-free charging. Touch ID, built into the iPhone since 2013, is expected to be built under the glass, an impressive engineering feat.

Nearly bezel-free front panel and rear panel with vertical camera, both said to be iPhone 8 components

Most rumors have focused on design, but we've heard that additional biometric features like facial recognition or iris scanning could be built into the front-facing camera, and the rear camera is going vertical, perhaps to support new augmented reality and 3D scanning functionality. An Apple-designed A11 processor will bring CPU and GPU improvements that can power the augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and machine learning technologies Apple is heavily pursuing.

iPhone 8 renders designed with iOS 11 screenshots

The iPhone's design has remained largely unchanged since 2014, so there's a lot to be excited about in 2017, so much so that analysts are predicting an upgrade supercycle. The design and technology advancements coming in the 10th anniversary iPhone will show just how far Apple's come and will shape iPhone development for the next 10 years.

At the end of the original iPhone event, then-CEO Steve Jobs said something that still dictates Apple's philosophy today. "You know, there's an old Wayne Gretzky quote that I love: 'I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.' We've always tried to do that at Apple. Since the very beginning. And we always will."

Facebook celebrates 2 billion monthly active users

This is a little bonkers. Out of the 7.5 billion people living on the planet, give or take a few hundred million, 2 billion visit Facebook at least once a month. On a conservative estimate, that's 1 out of any 4 people alive right now... any 4 humans, be it newborns, kids, teenagers, adults, elderly people, those without internet access, those in war-torn countries, those sick and unconscious, those living in the hidden nooks and crannies of our planet... literally one out of any four persons.

Mark Zuckerberg announced the news on his Facebook feed and it was later followed up by a post on the official Newsroom blog with more stats and a couple of new things. It revealed that there are 800 million Likes and 175 million Love reactions every day on Facebook, and more than 1 billion monthly users of Groups. Impressive.

As for the shiny new options, Facebook is focusing on the good being done on its platform under the "Good Adds Up" name. That includes a personalized video for you, a special thanks message when you post a Love reaction to something or wish a happy birthday or create a new group, and a dedicated page that celebrates the contributions and good being done by communities around the world. I may have to pop in there to be convinced that Facebook can serve a higher purpose than sharing wedding and baby photos, cat and puppy videos, and clickbait top 10 list articles.

[Update: Fix Released] Latest Google Play Music v7.9.4920 is crashing on launch for a lot of users

  • Update 1: 2017/06/27 10:10am PDT
Based on all the comments below, it looks like the bug is correlated with Bluetooth being on, and most likely with it being connected to a device. A temporary fix

  • Update 2: 2017/06/28 3:43am PDT
Google was fast in fixing this one. A new version 7.9.4921 has rolled out that should solve the Bluetooth-related crash issue. Early feedback seems to be positive about the bug

Google Play Music rolled out a new version of its app several hours ago that seems to bring a big bug in tow: many users are reporting that the app is crashing on launch so they can't listen to their music or use it at all.

The culprit version is 7.9.4920 and based on the reviews being left on the Play Store, the issue isn't limited to just a few users. I've been scrolling through pages and pages of comments saying the same thing essentially: the app force closes immediately after you try to open it. It doesn't seem to be related to a specific device or Android version either: some are seeing it on the O Dev Preview, others on Nougat, some on a Pixel, others a Nexus 5X or Galaxy S7, and so on. The app is still working well for me, so it seems like a widespread but not a universal bug.

If you're seeing the force close message, your solution for now is to revert back to the previous Google Play Music version 7.9.4918. If Play Music is a system app on your device, you'll probably have to disable it to revert to the original version that comes with your phone, then manually install v7.9.4918 by downloading the APK file from APK Mirror. And make sure you disable updates to Play Music in the Play Store, otherwise it will soon install the newer buggy version on top.

We'll keep an eye out on Google Play Music and see if there's a new release to fix this crucial bug.

Update 1: 2017/06/27 10:10am PDT

Based on all the comments below, it looks like the bug is correlated with Bluetooth being on, and most likely with it being connected to a device. A temporary fix would be to turn off Bluetooth, open the app, then turn it on and connect to your headset or speaker.

Update 2: 2017/06/28 3:43am PDT

Google was fast in fixing this one. A new version 7.9.4921 has rolled out that should solve the Bluetooth-related crash issue. Early feedback seems to be positive about the bug disappearing. If you had reverted to an older version of Play Music and disabled automatic updates, or if you are sick of disabling and enabling Bluetooth to open Play Music without it crashing, you can see if the latest version is available for you in the Play Store or grab it manually from APK Mirror.

Former Apple Executives Recall Designing Touchscreen Interface of Original iPhone

As we near the ten-year anniversary of the iPhone later this week, a few stories posted online have delved into the rich history of where the device started, how the original team came up with the idea for the touchscreen smartphone, and what it was like reviewing the device back in 2007.

In a new video shared by The Wall Street Journal today, three former Apple executives -- Scott Forstall, Tony Fadell and Greg Christie -- have taken a look back at the first days of designing the iPhone with Steve Jobs. Apple's former senior vice president of the iPod division, Tony Fadell, recounted a time when Jobs showed him the company's first demo for what would become the iPhone's touch-based operating system.

Image via WSJ

Jobs and the rest of the team were seeking a more elegant solution to a smartphone interface than the one they began with, which was an iPod click wheel interface, when Jobs invited Fadell into a demo room.
"Steve goes, "Come over here I need to show you something." So he walked me into the room...and it was basically like a ping pong table sized demo with a projector that was projecting a Mac interface on it. And you could use your whole hand and you could touch different things on it, like it was a big big Mac.

It was literally a ping pong sized multi-touch display. And he goes, "I think this is gonna solve our problem."

Former Apple vice president of iOS, Scott Forstall, recalled a specific time in 2005 when the iPhone team was put on a deadline of two weeks to come up with a better design for the smartphone's user interface. Jobs was not satisfied at the time with early iterations of the iPhone's look, and told Forstall and the team that he'd give the project to another group at the company if they failed to deliver.

Greg Christie, former Apple vice president of human interface, said that the team's design ultimately satisfied Jobs, and led to even more work over the next two years before the iPhone's launch in 2007.
"The first time he saw it he was completely silent, he didn't say a thing. He didn't say anything, he didn't gesture, he didn't ask a question. Then he sat back and he said, "Show it to me again." And so we go through the whole thing again and Steve was pretty much blown away by the whole demonstration. It was great work.

Our reward for doing a great job on that demonstration was to, you know, kill ourselves over the next two and a half years."

In 2006, Forstall froze development across the iPhone's user interface divisions to force the team to focus on one troublesome part of the smartphone's UI: the keyboard. At the time, Forstall said it was difficult to use and that if someone tried to type out an e-mail, they'd just "give up."

Forstall explained that one of the best keyboards pitched by a developer had a few clever advantages over all the others designed by the team. Namely, it could intelligently predict words, so if a user would type "T," the keyboard would make the hit region for "H" larger -- while the actual key remained the same size -- so that common words such as "the" were easier to type.

The full ten-minute video created by The Wall Street Journal, which is called "How The iPhone Was Born: Inside Stories of Missteps and Triumphs," is well worth checking out. Other topics discussed by Forstall, Fadell, and Christie include the creation of the iPhone's visual vocabulary (like pinch to zoom and rubber banding to mark the end of a scrollable page), as well as the company's Fight Club secrecy tactics for "The Purple Project," the code name for the original iPhone's creation.

Apple Releases Revised Version of Second iOS 11 Developer Beta

Apple today seeded a revised version of the second iOS 11 beta to developers for testing. The new version has a build number of 15A304j, compared to 15A304i for the original second beta, which was released last Wednesday.

The software update appears to be available for select iPhone and iPad models. It's unclear what revisions have been made at this point.

Registered developers can download the iOS 11 beta from Apple's Developer Center, or over-the-air once the proper configuration profile has been installed. A public beta will be released later this month.

iOS 11 is Apple's biggest software release ever for the iPad, with a new Dock that introduces much improved multitasking, a Files app for better managing files, improved Apple Pencil support, a revamped App Switcher, and system-wide drag and drop.

The update also includes many features for both the iPhone and the iPad, including a redesigned and customizable Control Center, a new Lock screen that's merged with the Notification Center. Peer-to-peer Apple Pay payments are being introduced in the Messages app, which is also gaining a new App Drawer, and there's a new Do Not Disturb feature that is designed to help drivers stay focused on the road. Siri, Photos, the Camera app, and more are also gaining significant improvements.

ARKit for developers will result in a wide range of new augmented reality apps, while a Core ML SDK will allow apps to become a whole lot smarter.

Nokia 6 coming to the United States in early July for $229

Earlier this year, HMD Global started production of Android phones with the Nokia brand. The Nokia 6 was revealed in January, and the Nokia 6 and 3 were announced the next month. The phones have been well-received, and HMD seems dedicated to quick updates. Unfortunately, none of them have been (officially) available in the United States.

HMD Global has announced that the Nokia 6 will go on sale in the United States in "early July," through Amazon. The phone will cost $229, but only the Matte Black and Silver colors will be available at first. The Tempered Blue and Copper models will arrive later this summer.

If you need a refresher, the Nokia 6 has a Snapdragon 430 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, a 3,000mAh battery, and a 5.5" IPS 1080p display. The phone was updated to Android 7.1.1 back in April, so I assume the US model will ship with that version. The US variant will have the same band compatibility as the existing models:

GSM: 850/900/1800/1900

WCDMA: Band 1, 2, 4, 5, 8

LTE: Band 2, 3, 4, 7, 12/17, 28, 38

You'll likely get the best performance on T-Mobile, especially as Band 12 is supported. Only partial support for LTE on AT&T is present, and the phone won't work at all on our CDMA carriers like Sprint and Verizon.

The flip phone is still alive: Samsung's Galaxy Folder 2 is coming to South korea

It makes sense that mainstream flip phones, at least in the United States, have gone the way of the dodo. Smartphones have become incredibly cheap over the past few years, and usually offer more functionality than a comparable flip/candy bar phone. Samsung still releases them in its home base of South Korea, but they usually run Android.

Today, Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Folder 2, which unsurprisingly will only be sold in S. Korea (at least for now). The phone has a 3.8" TFT LCD display, a Snapdragon 425 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of expandable storage. The battery is pretty small, at only 1,950mAh, but I suspect the display and mid-range CPU won't be very power-hungry.

The phone runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box, and will cost 297,000 won (about $260). Regardless of how impracticable this phone might be, especially when trying to navigate through Android apps with a keypad (though you can give up and use the touchscreen), I really want one.

Apple Supplier Confirms New iPhone Models Will Be 'Waterproof' With Wireless Charging

iPhone assembler Wistron has confirmed that at least one of Apple's next-generation iPhone models will be "waterproof" and include wireless charging capabilities, according to Japanese website Nikkei Asian Review.

"Assembly process for the previous generations of [iPhones] have not changed much, though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit," [Robert] Hwang, [Wistron CEO], told reporters after the company's annual shareholders' meeting on Wednesday.

Apple analysts Jeff Pu of Yuanta Investment Consulting and Arthur Liao of Fubon Securities claim Wistron is splitting orders for the upcoming 5.5-inch iPhone with a flat display with larger Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn, so it's likely that Wistron is referring to the so-called "iPhone 7s Plus."

Given the higher-end "iPhone 8" is expected to be a premium smartphone, positioned above the iPhone 7s Plus, that model will likely feature wireless charging and improved water resistance as well. That leaves the next 4.7-inch iPhone, which is already rumored to have wireless charging, and it's reasonable to assume the smaller model will have improved water resistance too.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models are already splash- and water-resistant with an IP67 rating, but Apple's fine print warns that "splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear." iPhone water damage is not covered by Apple's warranties.

Nevertheless, many iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus users use their smartphones in the shower, for example, without issue.

A report earlier this year said Apple's next iPhone models will feature improved IP68-rated water resistance. In the IP68 rating, the "6" means the next iPhone would remain effectively dustproof, with "no ingress of dust" and "complete protection against contact," while the "8" means the device will be even more water resistant.

Samsung's Galaxy S8, which already has IP68-rated water resistance, is able to withstand 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes.

Consumer Reports: Galaxy S8 bests iPhone 7 despite ‘awkwardly placed’ rear fingerprint sensor & more

Consumer Reports today is out with its latest smartphone ratings, highlighting recent releases from Samsung. The iPhone 7 is also in the mix, even though it’s nearing 9 months on the market at this point.

Given the iPhone 7’s age, it shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise that it was beat out by newer flagship devices from Samsung and LG…

The findings from Consumer Reports show the Samsung Galaxy S8+ rank as the top smartphone, closely followed by the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S7 Edge, and LG G6. The iPhone 7 Plus rounds out the top 5.

The testing publication praised the Samsung Galaxy S8’s design, packing a large screen in a small and narrow footprint. Though, both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ aren’t necessarily the best for one-handed operation.
The look of the S8 and S8+ is minimalist, modern, and elegant—and the design allows for a bigger screen in the same-size device.

While the S8 siblings are comfortable to hold, you may need two hands for many operations, and these aren’t phones we’d order online without first handling them in a store.

“Even on the smaller model, it will be hard for most users to reach the upper regions of the screen with their thumb,” lead phone tester Richard Fisco says.

One interesting tidbit comes concerning the rear-placed fingerprint sensor on Samsung’s flagships. Consumer Reports calls the fingerprint readers “awkwardly placed” and says that during testing, they regularly found themselves “repeatedly poking around to locate it—and smudging the camera lens in the process.

Consumer Reports also cites the Galaxy S8’s camera as a standout feature, saying that the lack of a dual-camera setup like what’s found on the iPhone 7 Plus doesn’t affect performance.

Finally, a few top-end cameras, including the iPhone 7 Plus and the LG G6, have dual rear-facing cameras, to enhance either zoom or wide-angle photography. The Samsung phones haven’t gone that route yet—and we don’t think they suffer for it.

The Consumer Reports review is interesting for a few reasons. The biggest thing to note here is that the 2017 flagships from Samsung are being compared to Apple’s 2016 flagships and that things will likely change quite a bit once the iPhone 8 is unveiled later this year.

Many of the features for which Samsung’s flagships were praised are expected to be flagship features of the iPhone 8. This includes things such as the nearly bezel-less design. The commentary concerning the rear-placed fingerprint sensor is also interesting seeing that the location of Touch ID is a notable point of contention for the iPhone 8 thus far.

Android O feature spotlight: Camera app updated to v4.4, with small UI tweaks

After the surprise early release of the 3rd Android O developer preview yesterday, everyone is busy searching for any subtle little changes here and there. The stock Android camera app was last updated back in February with new zoom and exposure controls. The new dev preview brings the camera up to version 4.4 and includes some minor UI tweaks.

The most noticeable difference is the addition of a camera/video toggle button. You can still swipe to move between the two functions as before, but for those who weren't aware of that behavior, or never used it, there's now a more obvious option.

Aside from the new switch, there's also a slight change to the size of the shutter button, with a thinner white ring around a bigger gray dot, and the button for toggling between the back and front sensors has lost its camera icon, replacing it with a little white circle. You can see a comparison between the two versions below.

Old: Version 4.3.

New: Version 4.4.

Anyone who's updated a compatible Nexus or Pixel device to the latest dev preview of Android O, which we now know will be Android 8.0, should see the new camera update. For anyone else, you can sideload it by picking it up from APKMirror.

Android O is confirmed to be 8.0 in the latest developer preview

We've all been debating about what the official name of Android O will be (it's going to be Oreo, guys, trust me), but there hasn't been much talk about the official version number. There were only ever two real options - 7.2 or 8.0. With the release of Android O's third developer preview, Google has revealed that it will be Android 8.0.

Looking at both the 'check update' and 'About phone' sections, the version number is now shown as 8.0.0. Given how many changes Android O has brought, this doesn't come as a huge surprise.

Teardown of new 21.5-inch iMac surprisingly reveals user-upgradable RAM, modular CPU

iFixit has wasted no time in carrying out a teardown of the new 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display, and has found that the RAM is user-upgradable, and the machine has a modular CPU. This means that – in theory – even the processor could be upgraded at a later date …

Pigs have flown. Hell hath—indeed—frozen over. It’s Christmas in June! Our teardown confirms that the new 21.5″ iMac with 4K Display has both removable RAM and a modular CPU. Of course, Apple would say neither is user-replaceable. Accessing and replacing these components isn’t exactly easy, but we’re saying it’s possible. Maybe even probable. A tinker-happy user (armed with the right tools and guide) could at least double the base 8 GB of memory, turning their new iMac with Retina Display into an iMac Semi-Pro.

This is the first time Apple has had a 21.5-inch iMac with expandable RAM since 2013, and the first modular CPU since 2012. The RAM board is shown above right, and here’s the modular CPU:

The company does note that the choice of CPU format may have been forced on Apple.
Maybe Apple reverted to a socketed CPU because that’s all Intel has at the moment (we haven’t seen any desktop-class Kaby Lake CPUs in a BGA package). But you’d think with Apple’s famously fierce negotiating skills, they could have gotten a soldered CPU from Intel if they really wanted it.

Don’t expect upgrades to be easy, however.
Despite the upgradable RAM and CPU, we’re still giving this iMac a 3/10 for repairability. Here’s why: the iMac remains distinctly un-fun to open. Everything is buried under a finicky glass panel. It requires a speciality pizza-cutter-like tool to breach the adhesive before any repair. Plus the glass and Retina Display are fused together, fabulously increasing the cost of replacement. But hey, a 3/10 is triple the score of the iMac’s 2015 predecessor.

You can see more photos over at iFixit.

Designed and developed by one person, Blackbox was chosen as an Apple Design Award winner for being fully accessible, and offering unique and ingenious gameplay, deep iOS integration, and clever innovations. Blackbox offers puzzles that rely on minimalistic clues, deliberate movement, elegant animations, and visual cues to expand creative thinking and encourage players to solve puzzles by turning, shouting, clicking, snapping, and more. It is fully accessible, taking a highly visual interface designed to be navigated by touch and and other sensory inputs, and adding a brilliant sonic interface that enables a new world of gameplay for everyone. It uses haptics for sensory feedback to make puzzles more personal, nuanced, and tactile, and relies heavily on the iPhone’s camera, accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer to enable sensory inputs. Additionally, by using CoreAudio, CoreLocation, Core Telephony, AVCaptureSession, iCloud, and GameCenter in novel ways, this app takes advantage of an enormous range of iOS technologies. Blackbox challenges the player's ingenuity and creativity through innovative presentation and unique interactions. The result is a game that is impressively clever and unlike anything we’ve played before.
